Traffic trial for the establishment of a cycle lane

More safety and quality of life around Everkeweg

At the same time, important findings on traffic flow, utilisation and acceptance are to be gathered during the trial.

"Especially for our youngest road users, a cycle lane on the way to school noticeably increases safety - and at the same time motivates them to cycle more often," explains Mayor Michael Gerdhenrich.

Temporary road closure at the level of Augustin-Wibbelt-Straße

As part of the traffic trial, Everkeweg will be closed to motorised traffic with bollards at the junction with Augustin-Wibbelt-Straße in order to increase the safety and attractiveness of the cycle route. The link will of course remain passable for pedestrians and cyclists. The city council invites all citizens to actively participate in the traffic trial and asks all road users to show consideration for each other.

What is a cycle lane?

Cycle lanes are specially designated roads on which cyclists have priority. They are marked with the traffic sign "Fahrradstraße" and are subject to special rules that increase the safety and comfort of cyclists.

Cyclists are allowed to ride side by side on the carriageway and do not have to be subordinate to other traffic. As is generally the case in road traffic, pavements may only be used by children up to the age of ten and their accompanying persons on bicycles.

Motorised traffic is only permitted on cycle lanes if a corresponding additional sign, such as "Motor vehicle free", expressly permits this. In this case, the following applies: motorists must adapt to the speed of cyclists and may neither harass them nor urge them to cycle faster. The maximum permitted speed is 30 km/h. When overtaking cyclists, a minimum distance of 1.5 metres must be maintained.

Positive effects

By setting up another cycle lane, the town of Beckum is sending out a clear signal for sustainable mobility - for the benefit of everyone who wants to cycle safely and comfortably. Children, senior citizens and less experienced cyclists in particular will benefit from increased safety thanks to the clear prioritisation of cycling.

Less car traffic also means less noise and exhaust fumes - a plus for the quality of life in the affected streets. The traffic-calmed character also creates a new quality of stay for residents and passers-by. Direct and safe routes will also make cycling much more attractive for commuters and leisure cyclists.
