Burial of urns in earth tubes

A dignified farewell in a new form at Elisabethstraße cemetery

A new innovative form of urn burial in so-called earth tubes is now being offered at Elisabethstraße cemetery. The urn is buried in a tube that is set vertically into the ground and offers space for two urns. It is sealed with a granite slab, which can be inscribed with the names of the deceased if desired. This special resting place is intended exclusively for members of the same family; there is no joint burial with strangers. The grave is embedded in a communal area that is permanently maintained by the cemetery administration at no cost to the relatives.

"By burying urns in earth tubes, we are responding to the changes in burial culture without losing sight of the importance of the cemetery," explain Silke Flüchter and Marita Denkert from the cemetery administration of the town of Beckum. "Many people today want an uncomplicated, care-free form of burial, but don't want to do without a place of remembrance. This new option combines both in a successful way."

Saying goodbye to a loved one is one of the most poignant experiences in life. This makes it all the more important to have a place that combines remembrance, commemoration and dignity. This is exactly what burial in a cemetery offers. A cemetery offers space for mourning, remembrance and encounters, a permanent place to visit. A place that provides support, invites you to linger and where rituals can be practised. At the same time, it creates the opportunity to talk to other mourners, to exchange ideas and to find comfort.
