No payment card, symbolic act, new electoral regulations for integration council

At the council meeting on 27 May, all items on the agenda were approved by a majority or unanimously as in the administrative proposal.

Payment card does not arrive

The payment card for asylum seekers is not to be introduced in Beckum. This was decided by a majority. The town of Beckum is thus utilising the so-called opt-out option. This means that the state government gives local authorities the option of not introducing the payment card if established systems already exist and are to be retained. The city of Beckum has a well-functioning, standardised process for the payment of asylum seeker benefits. If a payment card were to be introduced, time-consuming individual case reviews would have to be carried out. In addition, the nationwide introduction planned by the state does not appear to be achievable at the present time, and many local authorities in the district of Warendorf are already refraining from introducing it.

Council sets an example against right-wing terror

All members of the council and the mayor supported the motion by the Bündnis 90/Die Grünen parliamentary group to revoke the honorary citizenship of the National Socialist Dr Alfred Meyer (+1945 by suicide). As honorary citizenship automatically expires upon death, the decision is to be seen as a symbolic act.

Parallel constituencies for local elections and elections to the Integration Council

In order to increase voter turnout for the Integration Council, the electoral districts were reorganised and adapted to the districts for the local elections. The unanimous council resolution paves the way for new electoral regulations.
