Ground-breaking ceremony

Roland gets a village square for all generations

At the official ground-breaking ceremony, residents of the neighbourhood, representatives of politics and administration as well as the companies involved jointly gave the starting signal for the redesign of the square.

"The long-cherished wish of the village community is now taking shape," said Mayor Michael Gerdhenrich, who thanked everyone involved and is looking forward to a "village square with a great quality of stay".

A central meeting point for Roland

Plan

And this is what the square will look like in the future: The focus of the planning is the close connection between the village square and the community centre. In future, the area will serve as a lively link - a place where people of all ages can meet, linger and experience events.

A paved circular path opens up the square and links it to the surrounding paths. New seating will be created along this path, while loungers under the existing trees in the centre of the square invite you to relax.

A covered lounge area with a table and bench combination will be created next to the former church tower. An awning provides protection and makes it pleasant to use in all weathers.

Green spaces, openness and clear structures

The excavators have started work.

The large lawn in the southern area will deliberately remain open for use so that parties and events can continue to take place. The transition to the neighbouring playground will be opened up and marked by newly planted trees so that the two areas blend harmoniously in future.

Green space with trees
The future paths have already been excavated.

New planting areas with shrubs and meadows enclose the village square and give it structure. Decorative beds with robust perennials and shrubs accentuate both the lounge area by the church tower and the entrance to the community centre and create an inviting atmosphere.

The measure from the Roland village development concept is estimated to cost around 250,000 euros in total and is subsidised with 160,000 euros. The municipal share is therefore 90,000 euros.

Further improvements around the square

The upgrading of the environment also includes

  • three new mast lights along the car park - including sockets for the Christmas lights,
  • and three new bicycle racks in the immediate vicinity of the entrance to the community centre.

A small park in the heart of Roland

All these measures will create a village square that has the character of a small park - a place for all generations that strengthens the community and keeps the centre of Roland lively.
