Housing benefit - subsidy towards housing costs

Housing benefit is a social benefit under the Housing Benefit Act. It supports citizens with a low income with their housing costs. Housing benefit is paid as a rent subsidy (for tenants) or as an encumbrance allowance (for owner-occupiers). Housing benefit is only granted on application. The month in which the application is made is decisive for the date from which housing benefit is paid.

Whether and how much housing benefit you receive depends on the number of household members, the total household income and the amount of rent or charges.
