ISEK Beckum and cycle lane concept adopted

ISEK Beckum

City centres are facing ever greater challenges, for example due to online retail, social changes, the lack of affordable housing and the climate crisis. The integrated urban development concept for Beckum town centre (ISEK Beckum Innenstadt), which has now been adopted, forms the basis for acquiring urban development funding on the one hand, and on the other hand, as a holistic planning instrument, it helps to take all relevant aspects of urban development (transport, economy, environment, culture and social affairs) into account and bundle measures. This concept was drawn up by scheuvens+wachten plus planungsgesellschaft mbH from Dortmund on behalf of the town of Beckum. Two public forums and an online participation process were held in advance.

Two core measures in the concept are the

  • Further development of the green corridor in the city centre
  • and the remodelling of the Markt 1+2 building ensemble (city museum and former pharmacy) into a place for art, culture, history and tourism.

The cycling street concept was also approved by a majority. In addition to the cycling concept, it serves to identify potential cycle lanes in the urban area, to prioritise their implementation and to define a "Beckum standard" (uniform design of cycle lanes in the urban area). By prioritising cycling within the cycle lanes, the aim is to reduce the potential for accidents, improve the sense of safety of all road users and increase the comfort of cycling.
