Information for election workers September 2025

Making a cross alone is not enough for you? Then you've come to the right place!

We have compiled some information for you on the subject of election assistants.

In principle, you can always declare your willingness to take on an honorary position on the election committee. The electoral office will then contact you before the next election or vote and ask whether you would like to be appointed as a member of an election committee.

Requirements and tasks

  • Is this your first time? No problem: experienced secretaries and election officers are there to support you. After a few elections on the election committee, you will have gained enough experience to be appointed as a secretary or election chairman.
  • You must be eligible to vote in the upcoming election.
  • You don't need any special prior knowledge: everything you need is taught in an optional training course and with the training material.
  • You will be divided into two election teams (early shift 7.30 am to 12.30 pm and late shift 12.30 pm to 6.00 pm). You clarify the exact working hours on election day with your team at the polling station. The entire team does not have to be at the polling station until it gets exciting, at 6.00 pm when the votes are counted.
  • The scrutineers check the polling cards or identity cards and then hand out the ballot papers.
  • The clerks maintain the electoral roll and record the election minutes during the election process.
  • The election chairpersons direct the activities of the election committee during the election process and counting.
  • around 19:00:
In some polling stations everything has already been counted, in others it takes a few minutes longer. Finally, the polling clerks take the ballot papers to the electoral office and the other poll workers finish work.

If you have any questions, our colleagues from the electoral office will also help you individually on your way to the important function for the upcoming local elections.

Remuneration

You will receive a refreshment allowance for your work at a polling station or for counting postal votes. This amounts to 60 euros if you take on a functional office. We offer election training courses for all those who are taking part for the first time and also for those who have already worked as polling assistants.
