Identity documents for children
Performance specification
From 01.01.2024, children's passports will no longer be issued, extended or updated. The documents already issued will remain valid until they expire. The following documents will be issued for children of all ages (up to the age of 24) when travelling abroad:
- Identity card - with a validity period of 6 years and a fee of 22.80 euros. This is generally valid within the European Union. The Bundesdruckerei takes around two to three weeks to produce.
- Passport - with a validity period of 6 years and a fee of 37.50 euros. The Bundesdruckerei takes around 8-10 weeks to produce.
To avoid bottlenecks during the holiday season, we would like to remind you now to take this into account when planning your holidays for 2024 and to apply for your children's ID documents in good time.
When travelling abroad (e.g. the Netherlands), children (including infants) require an identity document.
