Cruelty to animals on an urban green space

The shepherdess commissioned by the town of Beckum was horrified to discover last week that unknown persons had broken into her fenced grazing area near Ahlener Straße and mistreated sheep there.

According to the information available so far, several animals were kicked and beaten with sticks. One lamb, just two weeks old, suffered such severe injuries that it had to be put down. The further effects on the herd of around 180 animals are not yet foreseeable.

The police have started an investigation. The town of Beckum is asking witnesses who have made suspicious observations to contact Beckum police station on 02521 911-0.

The sheep are used by the town of Beckum as natural landscape conservationists in various areas and make an important contribution to the maintenance and preservation of the town's green spaces.
