Delegation from Beckum visits Heringsdorf
Visit to Heringsdorf strengthens the German-German town twinning
Among those taking part in the trip were Beckum’s mayor, Michael Gerdhenrich; the chairman of the Beckum Association for Town Twinning, Ulrich Roggenkamp; and several councillors.
In an open and warm atmosphere, a lively dialogue developed between the participants from Beckum and their hosts in Heringsdorf – comprising the Friends’ Association, the local authority and politicians – characterised by mutual interest and a desire to further develop the existing town twinning arrangement.
The varied programme organised by the Heringsdorf Town Twinning Association offered numerous opportunities to strike up conversations and get to know the region. On the first evening, the Association hosted a barbecue in the garden of Villa Irmgard, the local heritage museum and memorial to the Russian writer Maxim Gorky. The atmospheric evening was accompanied by live music from the Usedom Island Shanty Choir.

‘The World Takes a Dip’: A visit to the Bikini Art Museum
The Friends’ Association had organised two excursions for Saturday morning. Anyone wishing to enjoy a very special experience of nature could visit the treetop walk in Heringsdorf. Those keen to learn more about 200 years of bathing culture, from Usedom to Hollywood, could visit the major exhibition ‘The World Goes Swimming’.
On Saturday evening, the Mayor of Heringsdorf, Dr Laura Marisken, hosted a convivial get-together featuring a ride on the Ferris wheel at the Heringsdorf GlanzZeiten site, a historic summer festival on Usedom. The evening drew to a spectacular close with a grand fireworks display at the Heringsdorf pier.
Many members of the Beckum delegation spent Sunday on an outing to Swinemünde by boat, bike or on foot, or took part in the numerous events organised as part of the Heringsdorf GlanzZeiten festival. To round off the evening, representatives from the local authorities, politicians and support associations from Beckum and Heringsdorf met once again at a beach bar in Heringsdorf, where initial plans for the next meetings were drawn up.
The perfect blend of cultural insights, personal encounters, shared experiences and glorious beach weather made the trip an unforgettable experience.
