Winning design for neighbourhood furniture finalised

Trying out the stool with the letter K

Neubeckum becomes "sedentary "
The jury agreed that the idea of the two students Muhittin Cetinel and Laura Stulgyte to create the lettering "Neubeckum" to sit on was a brilliant idea. It is reminiscent of the Hollywood lettering that everyone knows. The technical realisation was also well thought out and very successful, according to the jury. Each letter was fine-tuned until it was comfortable to sit on. After a test sitting of the "K" and the presentation of the materials, it became clear that cosiness and weather resistance were a given. The complete lettering should ideally be set up in a prominent public place in Neubeckum, while at the same time retailers, service providers or clubs could use individual letters to invite people to linger in front of their premises. The letters are stylish and create a sense of identity for Neubeckum.

Portable bench with high recognition value
Second place went to the portable bench "newbie" by Leander Fuchs. The jury was impressed by the idea of making a bench from a single multiplex board. "With the help of assembly instructions or a simple kit, anyone can build this bench, it looks chic and is affordable," said the jury. This idea also fulfils the basic idea for the district furniture. "The shape is simple and at the same time has a high recognition value." The benches could be put together to form seating groups and would also look good as individual pieces.

An exemplary model of the parklet design

Communicative furniture in public spaces
Third place went to the "Parklet" by Janina Hudde, Leon Gensler and Marie Schöneborn, consisting of several pieces of furniture that are communicative and flexible to use. The three students took up the idea of a living room in a public space. The jury was impressed by their idea of creating a quality of stay in the street space.

Designs on display
If you would like to take a look, the designs will be on display in the Verve e. V. neighbourhood living room from November. Funding is also to be applied for from the disposal fund for the realisation next spring together with Neubeckum residents, interested associations and institutions. Anyone who would like to take part in the construction of the seating furniture or would like to set up one of the pieces of furniture in their home can already contact the Neubeckum town centre management or Verve!

The student competition was financed by funds from the Neubeckum Disposal Fund. The idea, project application and 50 per cent of the students' own contribution came from Verve! with strong support from Sparkasse Beckum-Wadersloh. It was realised as part of the Eco-Design Seminar of the Design Department at Dortmund University of Applied Sciences and Arts, led by Geert Schüttler. The students had the task of designing street furniture for Neubeckum town centre. This was to be diverse, attractive, identity-creating and communicative, as well as suitable for outdoor use.

The jury consisted of lecturers from the Department of Design at Dortmund University of Applied Sciences and Arts, Verve e. V., employees of the town of Beckum and the Neubeckum town centre management.

Serena Große-Kreul and Annika Siebert from Neubeckum town centre management are looking forward to receiving further project ideas for the Neubeckum town centre disposal fund. Prerequisite: The measure must contribute to the beautification of the town centre. The projects are subsidised with up to 50 percent and a maximum of 6,000 euros.
