District furniture for Neubeckum

A small group from Neubeckum visited Dortmund University of Applied Sciences and Arts a few days ago for the interim presentation of the Eco-Design Seminar of the Design Department, led by Geert Schüttler. In the seminar, students develop street furniture for Neubeckum as part of a student competition.

The group was impressed by the designs so far - many creative, well thought-out furniture designs were presented. As the name of the seminar suggests, the sustainability of the designs plays a major role. Durability, recycled raw materials and also the use of locally or regionally produced materials were all considered by the students. The feasibility is also important: the winning design should ideally be built together with the people of Neubeckum and placed in the city centre. Soon you could be taking a break on a piece of furniture built in the district and designed for Neubeckum by students from Dortmund University of Applied Sciences and Arts.

Cooperation project

How does such a cooperation project come about in Neubeckum? The idea came up some time ago in the Verve! association - but they were still looking for a suitable form of implementation and finally turned to the Neubeckum city centre management. The city centre management team helped to qualify the idea as a disposition fund project and established contact with the Department of Engineering at the FH Dortmund University of Applied Sciences and Arts. Serena Große-Kreul from the city centre management is pleased with the development: "We are happy that such a great idea came from the district itself and that we can accompany and support its implementation". Verve! finances the materials for the model construction and the prize money and receives a subsidy from the city centre's Verfügungsfonds budget.

Winning design to be selected in autumn

"Now we are looking forward to the final presentation in autumn," says Amanda Bailey from the Verve! association. Then the group will set off again for Dortmund to select the winning design. The jury consists of the Verve! association, the Freizeithaus Neubeckum, the Beckum city council, the Neubeckum city centre management and the Dortmund University of Applied Sciences and Arts. For the construction of the winning design, an application is again to be made for a Verfügungsfonds project. Anyone who would be interested in helping to build the seating furniture or placing one of the seats in front of a shop, office or in another area is welcome to contact the city centre management or Verve!
