European elections on 09 June 2024

The citizens of the 27 EU member states elect the members of the European Parliament. In accordance with the provisions of the Direct Election Act, the election in Germany will take place on 9 June 2024.

Take the opportunity to go to the polls and help shape the future of Europe.

The more people take part in the election, the better MEPs can reflect the ideas of all EU citizens. Every vote cast decides what the future of democracy in the European Union will look like.

  • Direct postal voting possible at the postal voting office from 06/05/2024 to 07/06/2024

    From 6 May 2024, it will be possible to vote by post at the Beckum Adult Education Centre and from 21 May 2025 at the Neubeckum Citizens' Office or to apply for a postal vote in person.

    On 07.06.2024, the postal voting office at the Volkshochschule Beckum will be open until 18:00.

    In addition, the postal voting office at the Beckum Adult Education Centre will be open from 01/06/2024 to 02/06/2024 from 10:00 to 13:00.

  • Not received any election documents?

    If the requested postal voting documents have not been received, it is still possible to apply for a replacement ballot paper until Saturday, 8 June 2024, by 12.00 noon.

  • Who is elected?

    In the European elections, the citizens of the countries of the European Union elect the members of the European Parliament. The European Parliament is the only directly elected body in the EU. The last European elections were held in May 2019.

    This year, 720 MEPs will be elected. Of these, 96 seats will go to MEPs from Germany. This means that Germany has the most MEPs in the European Parliament - followed by France with 81 and Italy with 76.

  • Who is eligible to vote?

    German
    Anyone who is eligible to vote on election day

    • is a German within the meaning of Article 116 (1) of the Basic Law, i.e. has German citizenship,
    • has reached the age of 16,
    • has lived in Germany or one of the other EU Member States for at least three months or otherwise habitually resides there, and
    • is not excluded from the right to vote.

    If you meet these requirements and are registered in Beckum with your main or sole residence on 28 April 2024, you will automatically be entered in the electoral register in Beckum.

    EU citizens
    Anyone who is eligible to vote on election day

    • is a national of one of the other member states of the European Union,
    • has reached the age of 16,
    • has lived in the electoral territory or in the other member states of the European Union for at least three months on election day or is otherwise ordinarily resident there,
    • is not excluded from the right to vote
    • and has submitted the application for EU citizens to be entered on the electoral roll for the 2024 European elections.

  • Electoral area division

    The entire Federal Republic of Germany forms one constituency. Voting in the town of Beckum takes place in 19 electoral districts, to which voters are allocated according to their place of residence.

  • Voting system

    It is a list election according to the principles of proportional representation.
    The Federal Republic of Germany is represented by 96 deputies.

  • What happens after the election?

    As soon as the polling stations are closed and the votes cast have been counted, the results of the European elections will be published live on the European Parliament's website.

    On 16 July 2024, the Members of the European Parliament will meet and elect a new President. New political groups will also be formed. There are currently seven different political groups.
